No Words For The Oppressed What if the freedom of speech was the cause of your death? Well, welcome to attending the modern day high school. Harassment, verbal or physically, and teasing within high schools has pushed some students to taking their own lives and has caused them to even take out their rage on the entire school. Teen suicide rates have only increased through the years, school shootings are typically due to harassment to a certain individual from other students, and with that, you have to wonder: are the school handbooks really doing anything to prevent this tyrannizing? Does the school system even really do anything in attempt to stop this persecution? Since 2007, teen suicide rates have doubled. Now we’ve reached the question: are school handbooks even worth having to keep up the anti-bullying procedure? Within the Hollister High School Handbook (Hollister R-V Schools 14), it claims, â€Å"In addition to educating students about the content of this policy, the district will inform the students of: the producer for reporting bullying; the harmful effects of bullying; the consequences of those who participate in bullying† (Hollister R-V Schools 14). Even though the books mentions that there will be consequences for bullying, it fails to mention what the procedure they will ever actually execute. If the Hollister High School Handbook would to give the different degrees of bullying different results of consequences and specify them within the handbook, the rate of bullying within the school will drop significantly. There are often many verbal assassinations thrown around within the hallways of Hollister High School, but none of those students are ever punished. A t eacher may yell at them to quiet down, but will fail to actually address the oral insult they had clearly heard only seconds before hand.
